Helmet Therapy

In January, Gabe had to go to Primary Children's Hospital and have a specialist look at the shape of his head. He has what's called Plagiocephally. The back part of his head is flat and his ears aren't lined up correctly. It's a genetic disorder, and Gabe will most likely pass it down to his children. Insurance will not pay to have it fixed (they said it was a "cosmetic" procedure), so we have invested $1,860.00 in it so far! But he's worth every penny.

They had to take a plaster mold of his head like a cast on a broken arm. He did pretty well with it for about five minutes. He wanted to touch it and was curious as to what was on his head. The last fifteen minutes he was crying and wanted it off. By then it was hard as a rock and skin tight. He screamed when they removed it. His head was all sweaty and red. Poor little guy!

As you can see, he's still as cute as ever with his helmet and doesn't mind having it on. The treatment time usually runs 3-5 months depending on how fast his brain and body grow. He has to wear it 23 hours a day.

Crazy happy little man!

Still hamming it up, as usual. He had an appointment last week, and the specialist wants him to still wear it six more weeks. We want it perfect because of the time and money we've invested in it, and it's been such a protection for him crawling and banging his head on everything. He's starting to figure out how to loosen the strap, and he wants it off when he gets tired. On one hand it will be nice to be done with it, but on the other we're afraid of all the bumps and bruises he'll get without it.
